First Sardinia Adventure Raid Attracts Top Teams
Rob Howard / 01.04.2011
A new international race has been launched recently, in a surprising place. The Sardinia Adventure Raid will take place from April 14th-17th, and is the first international race to take place in Italy, a country which has, as yet, very few adventure races on its sporting calendar. The next race will help to promote AR within Italy and showcase the adventure sports potential of the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. The new event is supported by the Regione Sardegna and is a 350km multidisciplinary event crossing the wonderful landscapes of Sardinia and including orienteering, mountain-bike, canyoning, kayaking, surf-ski, trekking, nordic walking and a ride & run stage.
Starting off on the wild cliffs of Supramonte mountain the course moves down to the charming creeks of Golfo di Orosei. On the route twelve teams of 2 will have 60 hours to pass through deep canyons, centuries-old woods and amazing coasts in one of the most unspoiled areas of the Mediterranean Sea.
The teams include some familiar names, among them Karine Baillet, Buff and Bimbache Exteme, as well as Italy’s best know racer, Marco Ponteri. Marco is one of the worlds most experienced racers, but with few compatriots able to match his AR expertise he almost always competes international teams, and has just returned from a second placed finish at an international race in Chile.
The race opening ceremony takes place on April 14th, and SleepMonsters Editor Rob Howard will be reporting from the race.
