Team Dew Point, the only South African all-ladies team entered in the Bull of Africa race, presented a cheque of R100 000 to the East London-based Masimanyane Women’s Centre late yesterday afternoon.

“This race is about more than our personal journeys,” explained team leader, Lauren Greeff, “Supporting the Masimanyane Women’s Centre is our way of giving back to the communities that we’ll be encountering along the way during the race.”

Greeff explained that they raised the money through personal donations, a bingo evening, and a lucky draw. The fact that they are an all-ladies team supporting an organisation against gender-based violence – and that the race will be starting on women’s day! – encapsulates the spirit of their initiative.

The Masimanyane Women's Support Centre is a non-profit organisation based in East London, South Africa. With a specific focus on gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health, women’s rights and the gendered nature of HIV and Aids, its overarching goal is to educate and empower both women and girls.

Lesley-Ann Foster, founder and executive director of the Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre, explained their intention of building their own premises within a police compound with the money – a place where women and girls can feel safe and receive the support they deserve. When asked about team Dew Point, she said, “They are phenomenal women who have linked their personal values to this communal cause; we are very grateful.”

Team Dew Point comprises captain and team navigator Lauren Greeff, power paddler and route finder Kelly Botha, mountain biker and “workhorse” Daleen van Staden, as well as mountain biker and navigator Tamryn Taylor. We wish them luck for their upcoming quest!
