By Paul RomeroJust after 5:00 a.m. this morning Team DART - Montrail (Jen Segger, Matt Hart and Cyril Jay-Rayon) paddled into the famous beachside party town of San Felipe. The team took 69 hours to traverse this amazing piece of land. The journey took them from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Cortez. In addition to winning the Baja Travesia this clinched the team\'s title as Explore California Champions.
Purely smooth and methodical racing was the real story for this team from the Pacific Northwest (and Canada, too). While not really having a blazing fast paddle, nor a super strong bike or foot sections, the navigation was the determining factor.
The real meat and potatoes of the course was The Devils Canyon, a 6000 foot descent to the desert floor. At the finish line, team navigator Cyril Jay-Rayon said, \"We knew this race was going to be won in the canyon, we just didn\'t think it would be won by us. This course is unbelievable in it\'s diversity.\"
The European medley of Team Nike ACG and The Canadians of The King IN/BC team were duelling it out on the approach to the top of the lip of the enormous Devil\'s Canyon. Maybe it was lack of sleep, or perhaps a momentary loss of focus, but both took completely wrong descent routes into the canyon, which has zero tolerance for mistakes.
Having spent several hours cliffed out, and makeshift rappelling, team Nike ACG would spend double the expected time for this section, dropping from first to fifth place. |
