Race overview:Race overview:
In spite of some funding problems (or perhaps because of them), this race is one of the few on the planet that offers true adventure. The wilds of Patagonia won’t have it any other way.

The new kids on the block really are kids! Look out for 17 year olds Benjamín Cáceres and Joaquín Vásquez in the years to come.

Team GNC – what good sports!Team GNC – what good sports!
If this race offered a good sportsmanship award, it should definitely go to GNC’s Víctor “Mono” (monkey?) González and Diego “Perro” (dog) Banfi. (Yes, Chilean nicknames are a bit weird...)

Today, on our longest and coldest day of racing yet, AL AIRE LIBRE/URUGUAY finally consolidated the slim lead that they have maintained for three days now.

What a gripping finish to today’s paddle down Ultima Esperanza Sound, as GNC and AL AIRE LIBRE/URUGUAY battled for the lead over the final three kilometres.

A lovely day on the riverA lovely day on the river
The air was crisp, and the snow sparkled on the ground. I followed the kayaks in a zodiac, and every meander of the river led to another breath-taking view of a frosty castellated mountain peak.

Aside from the spectacular frosted mountain scenery, racers were treated to all sorts of wildlife: ñandú (like emus), guanacos, a patagonian skunk, and even a puma!

Ann Meidinger – winning racer from PER’s last summer edition, and an organizer of this winter race – told me last night how amazing it is that the Patagonian wind has calmed so much these last two months. Well, not so today!

I’m leaving the long days of northern summer for a six-day race taking place in the depths of Patagonian winter... and looking ahead to what’s in store!
