Red Bull Neptune Steps, the ultimate open-water adventure race, returns to the Forth and Clyde Canal in Glasgow next month for a third year in a row.
However, only 400 competitors will be given the chance to take part, with entry officially opening today (Tuesday, February 14) at 10am.
Interested swimmers are urged to sign-up as soon as possible to guarantee entry after last year’s Red Bull Neptune Steps sold-out in a record eight minutes.
Mark Deans, from Jordanhill, won the event in Glasgow in 2015 and in Sweden last year. And he is returning to the ice-cold temperatures at Maryhill Locks to defend his title.
Mark said: “It won’t be easy, but I’m hoping to make it three in a row in my hometown.
“The Red Bull Neptune Steps course is a real test of raw power and speed-endurance.
"I’d encourage anyone looking to challenge themselves in 2017 to give this one a go as it’s the only event of its kind.”
Red Bull Neptune Steps will start with 400 competitors competing in heats throughout the day, and will feature separate female and junior competitions. The winners from each round will move onto the semi-final heat and eventually the final.
Each canal gate features a different obstacle, which the swimmers have to climb over before diving into the next section of water, including cargo net, ropes, wood ladder, rope ladders and a climbing wall.
• Red Bull Neptune Steps will take place on Saturday, March 18 at Maryhill Locks in Glasgow. For more information on watching the event or taking part, visit redbull.co.uk/neptunesteps.
