Trekking in Kashmir

The team behind the highly successful Expedition Africa series is partnering with Jammu and Kashmir Tourism, introducing Expedition India to the world of Adventure Racing.

International race directors, Stephan and Heidi Muller, have a reputation for tough, scenic races that take competitors to unexplored wildernesses, on race routes that showcase the best of nature against the reality of racing over 400 plus kilometres.

Together with Jammu and Kashmir Tourism and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, Expedition India will take teams from Srinagar via road to Sonamarg and through Ladakh, nicknamed the Land of High Passes and one of the country’s most remote regions.  Sharing borders with Tibet and China, in Northern India , much of the region is at 3,000 metres,  with its highest peak Stok Kangri capping 6,153m in the Leh valley. The venerated Indus River is the backbone to this region.

“We are proud of our region and its history and diversity,”  says Director of Tourism in Kashmir, Mr. Mahmood Ahmad Shah of the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Authority, “and together the Expedition India team have been able to get racers access to rare parts of our country, many foreigners don’t get to see.”

Having built their reputation as international racers before moving on to delivering World Series events in Swaziland and South Africa, the Mullers are keen to apply their hard learnt skills to the sub continent.

“This is an exciting partnership for us,” says Heidi Muller, “there is so much for us to showcase:  from the beautiful Dal Lake in Srinagar, to Sonamarg ‘the Indian Alps’, right through to Ladakh, teams will have an experience of a life-time. We tried to include the most beautiful parts of this area and every person will go back home with an incredible experience.  Jammu and Kashmir has so much for us to experience and explore.”

“Adventure racing is about so much more than speed and fitness,  it is an opportunity to explore and experience parts of our world that people don’t often venture into. This is the spirit that underpins the race design for Expedition Africa and its what we’ll bring to Expedition India,” says Stephan Muller. “Teams can expect a 450km race that tests their navigation, their skills across a range of disciplines and their ability to work together to manage temperature  and altitude  in one of the world’s great wildernesses.”

Its near impossible for  Heidi and Stephan to organise an Expedition Race of this nature alone. Its takes nearly 6 weeks for Stephan to scout a potential route for Expedition Africa. In India, Stephan had only 3 days, however with the help and partnership of Rimo Expeditions, so much more was possible. Rimo Expeditions, India’s foremost Adventure Travel Company , winner of two National Awards and  with 25 years of outdoor experience,  will be  the land operator in Leh (their backyard)  for the event.

Rimo Expeditions has a global reputation for their ability to organise adventure trips in remote parts of the Himalaya and Karakoram pioneering  routes. Rimo Expeditions is also the only Indian company to organise several successful expedtions to Mt. Everest, and in 2013 they  brought back 4 tonnes of garbage from the mountain.

As with any major sporting event, there is often an enthusiastic and supportive sponsor to help make things a little easier. J&K Bank have come to the aid of Expedition India in a bid to showcase more of their beloved province Jammu and Kashmir. Incorporated in the year 1938, J&K Bank have their headquarters in Srinagar, where participants will participate in their first prologue. J&K Bank’s mission is to use its core competence to serve and empower the people in general and entrepreneurs in particular.

The bank envisages empowerment as a process of enhancing the capacity of individuals, groups and communities much like Heidi and Stephan have done with each Expedition they have organised,  back home, in South Africa. With the community and participants in mind, together the possibilities are endless.

Expedition India is proud to have Air India as their official Airline Partner for the event. Expedition India Teams will fly from Delhi to Srinagar on the 12th Septermber and return from Leh in Ladakh to Delhi after the event. Bike boxes will go directly to Leh in Cargo and the event organisation is heavily dependant on their colaboration with Air india to make sure all gear and bike boxes arrive safely in Leh.
