BUFF Mountain Festival Closed With 1,300 Participants All Activities

Author : Press Release

The incredible landscapes of the Parc National D'Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici as well as the magical settings of La Vall de Boí had been the chosen venue for the celebration, on 7, 8 and 9 July, of the first edition of BUFF® MOUNTAIN VALL DE BOI FESTIVAL.

122 runners faced the test of the BUFF EPIC TRAIL, the Ultra Marathon 105k, a race that undoubtedly deserved its epic status. In the refuge of Saboredo (51.8km) when Yeray Durán and Pau Bartoló were leading the race, a severe thunderstorm and the forecast of worsening weather conditions for the next few hours, forced the organization to stop the race in Espot (67.5km) and inform the runners who were arriving at the points of Espot and Estany de Gento (81,5km).

A difficult decision for the organization as they know the effort and the high degree of preparation for an Ultra Marathon - with an accumulated positive slope of 8,000 meters and positive slopes of 56% such as the BUFF® EPIC TRAIL 105k. But, the main objective of the organization is to ensure the safety of all participants. Only those runners who had passed the Estany de Gento point at the time the race stopped, could continue to finish as they were out of danger area. Thus, Gerard Morales won with the victory (13:27:22) followed by Luis Duarte (13:33:39), Miguel Ángel Sánchez (13:48:31) and Ernest Ausiró (14:04:08).

The women's classification was based on the order of arrival at the Espot point (67.5km), which was where the race was cut: Judith Franch (09:37:44), Leire Martinez (09:50:32) and the Runner of the BUFF® Pro Team Manuela Vilaseca (10:27:31).

384 trail runners competed last Saturday in the 42k Sky Marathon®, part of the Skyrunner World Series.

The men's class was characterized by a constant struggle for the first place between Aritz Egea and Eugeni Gil, Eugeni finally taking the lead at kilometer 32 (Curva de Sant Martí) becoming the undisputed leader of the marathon and winner of the 42k championship in 04 : 08: 24 For his part, Aritz Egea got his second position in 04:11:52, followed by Adrien Michaud who completed the race in 04:16:47.

The podium of the female category was also closely fought until the last moment with a constant dance of positions between Oihana Azkorbebeitia, Laura Sola and Celia Chiron.

The half-marathon 21K, which started and finished in Barruera had approximately 400 runners, was the last BUFF® EPIC TRAIL 2017 race.

The persistence and strength of Ismail Razga, who ran the 42k marathon the day before, and despite suffering a fall in the 21k race that saw him lose his leadership for some kilometers, managed to take the win in the last meters with a time of 02:18:53.

13 seconds later Jo Forseth (02:19:06), who has been leading the race until he was surprised by Ismail. Juan Javier Jiménez, who finished this half marathon in 02:19:29 completed the podium. In women's category Núria Picas of the BUFF® Pro Team (02:55:51) returns to the competition after her retirement from Makalu and still recovering from pneumonia, she passed Clementine Geoffray, who had been leading the race so far, but after the overtaking of Núria Picas, she finished the race in second place (03:00:10). Finally, Imma Boada completed this podium with a time of 03:13:19.

Simultaneously to the Half Marathon, in Barruera has been held the mountain bike competition that has decided the champion of Catalunya in distance marathon. After a demanding high mountain circuit that reached the ski resort of Boí Taüll - 58km away, 2,100m of positive difference and 2,272m altitude - Ever Alejandro Gómez, Tomás Bellès-Cannondale, and Ramona Gabriel, BUFF ® Scott Team, have been proclaimed the champions of Catalonia on BTT.

An event that has brought together all types of competitors, experts and amateurs, and even entire families who have wanted to approach the festival to participate in the numerous activities both leisure and sports that have been carried out throughout these three days - Rafting, mountain-oriented workshops as well as the discovery of the Romanesque through the "Románico a Escena" play have been the most popular recreational activities these days.

On the other hand, the kids have been the ones who have participated most and enjoyed the activities offered by this festival, from the Natural Campus to different workshops and the participation of almost 100 mini runners, between 4 and 14 years, in the Mini Skyrace race, whose registration was free and participating in it kids collaborated with the #UNICEF campaign against child poverty. In addition, the BUFF® Mountain Festival has coincided with the traditional "Falles" d'Erill la Vall, declared in the UNESCO World Heritage.

The fourth edition of the BUFF® EPIC TRAIL and the first edition of the MTB MARATHON® have also been part of this festival which, on Sunday, comes to an end after three days of mountain activities, sports, live music and fun for all the family.
