Steep slopes, long exhausting climbs and technical descents, spectacular views of the Tatra mountain passes and highland valleys, a demanding route in terms of navigation and increasing fatigue and sleepiness, all this is waiting for racers in this year's Adventure Trophy 2018 - the oldest adventure race in Poland.

Just like last year, the headquarters of the competition and the finish line will be organized in Krakow, so apart from sports challenges, participants will have the opportunity to learn about one of the oldest Polish cities.

There will be about 100 competitors from all over Europe at the start, coming from Spain, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Russia, Ukraine and Estonia. They will have to cover the route race on bikes, on foot, by kayak and on skates, reporting together to individual checkpoints.  The selected route between them is a choice for the teams on the basis of their analysis of the maps they will receive.

Contestants will mark their presence at checkpoints by using an electronic system (SI cards) which they will receive before the start. On some checkpoints, they will be performing special tasks such as: swimming, rock climbing, caving.

During the Adventure Trophy 2018, contestants will compete on two routes:

Long Course; a classic adventure race for mixed teams of 4 people (a team needs to include one woman at least) competing non-stop over a total distance of 400km in a time limit of 72 hours.

Teams will begin their adventure on Thursday morning in Zakopane and after about 50-55 hours, the fastest should cross the finish line in Kraków.  The linear route will consist of several very different stages, such as: hours of trekking in the Tatra mountains, 2 long and demanding stages of cycling with an elevation of up to 6000 m, a very impressive kayak stage, 2 stages of trekking with difficult night navigation, dozens of kms for fast skating and 2 stages of orienteering. In addition, teams will have to perform special tasks: including swimming, rock climbing, and caving. This route is part of the European Cup in adventure racing - ARES

For less experienced contestants, or those who are looking for slightly shorter challenges, the organizers have prepared a Short Course - for 2-person teams. The total distance is approximately 200 km within the limit of 36 hours. The shorter route does not mean, however, that it will be easier!

Navigating in the rough terrain, the diversity of the disciplines, struggling with their weaknesses, as well as cooperation within the team, these are the basis of adventure racing - probably the most demanding endurance sport ever invented.

In addition to the popularization of this fiendishly difficult sport, the organisers’ main aim is to show the diversity of Poland.  The teams will start at the foot of the Tatra mountains, they will cover several mountain ranges, reaching a few bodies of water and more than a dozen rivers and all of this within 3 days of unforgettable adventure.

The organizer of the project is the Adventure Association and you will be able to find more details on their web site: www.adventure-trophy.pl and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/adventure.trophy .

Entries are still open (until the end of June), and next year’s race will be the 2019 European Championship.
