Worlds Best Set Sights on Sri Lanka
Press Release / 01.03.2019
Sri Lanka has been a huge drawcard with teams from France, United Kingdom, South Africa, Czech Republic, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Ecuador, China, Japan, Ireland, Canada, Switzerland, Belgium and USA signing up for the AR World Championship 2019.
In addition to the worlds best, there is an unprecedented number of first time teams from the region registering for the race. These include fresh teams from India, China, Malaysia and the host country Sri Lanka.
Race Director Craig Bycroft said “Sri Lanka is such a vibrant and colourful country with landscapes you normally only dream about. I can see why the destination for this year’s championship has been so popular.”
“At this stage there are still General Entry spots available but I don’t think they will last long”
“It will be an extraordinary adventure racing journey through Sri Lanka. Our team hasn’t designed any legs to be show stoppers for teams – all the legs are totally doable. Elite teams will be able to race as hard as they like – and mid/rear pack teams will be able to make the finish line with good teamwork, endurance and mental strength.”
The host country Sri Lanka will be represented by a number of first time adventure racing teams. The organising team recently met with representatives of the Sri Lankan Army, Navy, Airforce and Police who were all eager to have teams participating in the event. ARWS accredited trainers will be heading to Sri Lanka in the next few months to help prepare these teams with specific skills training and an adventure racing camp.
Athletes should be prepared to scramble through tropical canyons, raft down white water rivers, mountain bike trails to a backdrop of trumpeting elephants and abseil down waterfalls. They will journey 600km through the Southern coasts and the cooler hill country of the central region. Transfers will be arranged for teams arriving in Colombo to HQ at one of the idyllic beachside towns.
Sri Lanka has also been a winning destination with friends and family of the registered athletes, many of whom are planning to coincide their annual holidays with the championship.
