The PowerBar Three Peaks Yacht Race
Go for Fort William
Rob Howard / 26.06.2007
Race leaders Vlad the Impaler look all set to reach Fort William this evening. After their ‘night of the northerlies’ things have now turned in their favour. First and foremost the wind has swung round to a westerly and this in turn has enabled them to make it past the tidal gate at the Sound of Luing. (See photo.)
This narrow channel in between the islands at the northern of the Sound of Jura is one of a series of tidal gates the yacht has to pass, and the good news is that once through Luing the chances are they can catch the remaining tides to push them into the finish.
This is just past the town of Fort William, at the village of Corpach where the Caledonian Canal exits into Loch Linnhe. If the cloud does not obscure the view there is a dramatic view of Ben Nevis from here, and it’s why the race finish was moved to this location many years ago.
At the time HTV were making a film of the race and the move was made at their request. This was just the first of many films on the race and when lad arrive they too will be filmed, this time for an hour long documentary for Channel 4, made by Dream Team TV.
There will be cameramen waiting for them on Ben Nevis and they are currently have a camerawoman on board and are being shadowed by the motor cruiser Farsain which is also filming them.
For the runners there is now a prospect of a third night time ascent in one race. Adam Marcinowicz and Keith Read have already run up Snowdon and Scafell Pike in appalling conditions in the dark. This time at least they will hope the weather is better, even if it still dark. Depending on when they arrive they may yet see a mountain sunrise.
