Oetztal Cycle Marathon Returns With 2700 Riders and a Longer Route
30.08.2021
2,751 hobby athletes and amateurs took to the starting line together at five degrees Celsius for the 40th edition of the legendary Ötztaler Radmarathon road cycling race.
Among them was ex-biathlete Dominik Landertinger from Fieberbrunn/Tyrol, who took part in the legendary road race as well as the winner of the last two editions Mathias Nothegger (2018 and 2019). The defending champion unfortunately had to pull out of the race on top of the Brenner Pass due to back pain.
After a rockfall between Oetzerau and Ochsengarten a couple of days prior to the race, this year's route went via Haiminger Sattele up to Kühtai. The 40th edition of the Ötztal Cycle Marathon was therefore ten kilometres longer with about 250 metres extra altitude.
Johnny Hoogerland (NED) was the first to cross the finish line after exactly 7:21.01,0 hours, while his compatriot Hans-Jörg Leopold from St. Stefan im Lavanttal narrowly won the sprint for second place against the Italian Mattia De Marchi from Noale (Venice region) by one second.
In the women's overall classification, the winner this year, as in 2019, was Christina Rausch (GER). The Hamburg native needed 8:15.20,0 and was a good 35 minutes faster at the finish than Veronika Weiss (GER/Tutzing) in second place and Bianca Somavilla (AUT/Fulpmes) in third place.
