Wenzhou Outdoor Challenge
Team NZ Adventure Stretch Lead on Day 2
Team NZ Adventure / 13.04.2014
Day two started with a big climb up a zillion stairs to a temple (which a monk ran with us for part of - he did not look fit at all but managed to stay ahead of us to the top fully clothed which was hilarious & bizarre - a nice china experience). Then it was back down a zillion stairs to find lots of locals out on the streets cheering us on which was neat. This was followed by 10 kilometres of flat running.
Stage two was a torture paddle as the first 1-1.5hrs we were paddling into a current sticking close to the bank & then the tide changed & finally the pace started to pick up. Definitely the most polluted river one of the athletes had ever seen. A far cry from the rivers of NZ. The paddle was approximately 2.5-3 hours long, which we paddled with Team Thule.
Stage three was the Mountain Bike leg where the team spent a substantial amount of time with Thule, they managed to get a slight gap however. Jess soon crashed after this but recovered O.K.
The final stage was an abseil off a building which first had to be ran up, only two team members had to do this stage. Reports are that Jess and Bob were more than happy to allow Dougal and Braden the enjoyment of the abseil experience.
Another win, but the team are well aware racing in China often relies on luck and it is still close racing. The kiwis continue to dominate especially with Red Bull (Richard Ussher, Elina Ussher, Trev Voyce and Stu Lynch) racing well and only 15 minutes behind Team NZ Adventure. Team Thule are 45 minutes back in third.
Two more days to go and the bodies are hurting!
