Ultra-runners could be described as obsessive, sadistic, compulsive, even superhuman and then just plain crazy, with many of these characteristics and more clearly on display during New Zealand's first ultra-staged run, the Anchor Milk Otago Alps 2 Ocean Ultra that is back for its second edition that starts SUNDAY 24 FEB at the base of New Zealand's highest mountain Mt Cook.
The world of ultra-running is so unique and special, with a real sense of genuine support for each other rarely seen in sport. The athletes spend the week together staying each night in a camp site where stories are told and tears are shared as they prepare themselves to go through it all again the following day.
The event threw up a few surprises last year with wine tasting on route, train and bus trips, a helicopter flight, jet boating and runners even got treated to some beautiful local salmon during one of the stages…. There’s more surprises in store for runners this year…
