Salzkammergut Trophy 2019: To hell and back

Austria's biggest and arguably hardest mountain bike event is back. From 12 to 14 July, 2019, 5,000 athletes coming from more than 40 countries are meeting up in Bad Goisern again to celebrate the traditional “ride to hell”.

What sounds martial is still the best paraphrase for the extreme distance with its total length of 210 kilometres and 7,119 metres of climbing the 900 most courageous riders of the registered field are tackling each year in order to push themselves to their limits.

On 13 July, the starting signal will be fired off at 5 AM CET with international pros and hard-boiled amateurs alike trying their best to earn the iconic black finisher shirt which awaits everyone covering the total distance of the longest Trophy route through the Salzkammergut Mountains.

However, it's a tough one to accomplish as riders might have to come back several times before finally making it from start to finish. To beat the extreme distance power and stamina as well as a lot of mental strength is mandatory.

While marathon mountain bikers from all over the world are chomping at the bit, some well-known Austrian winter sports athletes have also become infected with the Salzkammergut Trophy virus. In 2019, former ski jump star Andreas Goldberger as well as four-time snowboard world champion Benjamin Karl are keen to jump on their bikes.

Besides blood, sweat and tears, the season's highlight of the Austrian mountain bike scene features a wide programme of side events.
