Reaching For the Stars with the People of Lac-Mégantic

Press Release / 06.04.2017See All Event Posts Follow Event

In 2013 a terrible rail disaster in Lac-Mégantic resulted in 47 deaths and considerable destruction on the town centre. The new Xtreme triathlon CanadaMan/Woman takes place from the town on July 9th with athletes from around the world racing and reaching for the stars in support of the local community.

British Xtreme triathlete Chris Stirling will be among those taking part, and reporting for SleepMonsters on the experience.

An unforgettable emotional start is awaiting athletes at the CanadaMan/Woman Extreme Triathlon in Lac-Mégantic!

There will be 130 athletes coming from about 12 countries to taking part in CanadaMan/Woman Extreme Triathlon of Lac-Mégantic in addition to the 90 athletes that will do it as a team. Apart from Canada, they are coming from Argentina, France, Réunion Island, Italy, USA, Mexico, Brazil, Equator, Estonia, UK and the Philipines to swim, bike and run in the wonderful Lac-Mégantic region.

Before the start of the race, at dawn, on July 9th, all the racers will have the opportunity to take part in the Marche du Vent (Wind Walk):

Thousands of years ago, men and women undertook a long walk across our territory, the first walk in Eastern Canada. It was a bumpy road and they faced many obstacles, but their path was also filled with stories, courage, and perseverance.

On the morning of July 9th, 2017 we will walk along the Marche du vent, a boardwalk that lines the railway that, since 2013, has witnessed both heavier footsteps and the strength of people driven to rebuild themselves. Join us for this walk and, like the Lac-Mégantic population, challenge yourself. As you walk, you will be able to set your sights on your goal, the summit of Mont Mégantic.

For almost 4 years now, we visit this site to gather, reflect, and remember this story of men and women who continue to push forward despite adversity. Events brought us to our knees, but we have faced adversity with hope and faith while maintaining our trajectory. Like us, you hope to see the stars.

The route to the summit will be strewn with pitfalls, but strength is found in getting back up, looking ahead, and never losing faith. We must have faith in others as well as trust our own capacities and strengths. Thus, the wind will carry this desire to surpass ourselves throughout this walk that will symbolize the resiliency of men and women.

During your ascension, Lac-Mégantic residents will be inspired by your courage, perseverance, and strength. This will help them continue to make progress and they will follow in your footsteps towards new heights.

Your presence will show you support our community and breathe new life into our efforts.

CANADA MAN, CANADA WOMAN, it is time to make your mark in Lac-Mégantic and reach for the stars!
