The Savannah Scramble – the Coastal Empire’s FIRST Adventure Race!
Press Release / 03.02.2022
Savannah, Georgia will finally be getting in on the adventure race action! Possum Jump Adventures have created the Savannah Scramble, a 10-hour event for April 9th, 2022 that will be the first race of its kind in the lowcountry.
Beginning and ending under the beautiful canopy oaks of Skidaway Island State Park, this event not only explores the coastal marshes and shaded trails of the Savannah area, but has a traverse of Historic Savannah so that participants can soak in 300 years of history as they move through the historic squares and tree-lined streets. There are two segments that visit older coastal communities important to the Gullah culture and the area’s long fishing and sailing history.
The paddle segment will explore one of the many tributaries that slowly wind out towards the Atlantic. Depending on what time racers hit the paddle and how many CP’s they go for in the water leg, racers may have to contend with the tide as they search, but there’s no open-ocean risk. You may want to up those arm workouts though!
“This is one of my favorite landscapes on earth,” says Race Director Tracey Brower. “I don’t know of another place that has history, natural areas, and this amazing, welcoming community so closely tied together. I’m so excited to finally create a race here. It’s been a dream of mine for a while.”
Brower notes that Savannah is perfect for creating a race that’s both beginner-friendly and challenging for experienced racers. “Because the terrain is gentle, I made sure to put extra length on the trekking/biking portions so that our elites have enough places to explore, and our new racers can customize the length of all the legs to their experience and endurance level. I think this is going to be a huge confidence booster for new teams, because the terrain will let them cover more ground than they expect, and they will finish this race fired up and ready to take on another one. There is even going to be a FREE mini-clinic the night before the event so that anyone who is nervous can get some extra support.”
Racers have two registration options; for $150 per racer, boats, pdf’s, and paddles are included, and if participants want to bring their own boats, they can get a discounted rate of $125 per racer.
Will this be the beginning of an annual lowcountry event? “I sure hope so. I started with a 10-hour race because I knew I could make an exciting design for that length and it’s such a great length for new teams, and people who bring families will be able to enjoy Savannah with them for the rest of the weekend. But I definitely have some longer designs playing around in my head for areas just outside the city. It’s just an amazing place to adventure.”
