The inaugural edition of Alpine Quest Adventure Race kicked off yesterday in Victorian Premier Alpine Resort Falls Creek.
Victorians Jarad Kohlar, Elizabeth Dornom, Angus Rodwell and Queenslander Dave Schloss reached the finish line after 4h 29 minutes of racing, 4 minutes in front of Wild Earth Tiger Adventure - Tasmanian mountain biking specialists. A further 16 minutes behind them, coming in third place was AdventureJunkie.com.au.
29 teams, with four members per team, lined up for the first part of the epic challenge, which consisted of lake paddling, mountain biking and trekking in the spectacular Alpine setting of Falls Creek Resort.
The race format is 2 stages: Day 1 and Day 2. The event has two courses: Expedition (6+36 hours) and Explore (6+10 hours).
The First day started with a short prologue run in the Falls Creek village with a map given just at the start line. Leading the run was team AdventureJunkie.com.au, headed up by experienced multisport champion Luke Haines, who made his return to adventure racing this year. Alpine Avengers, Wild Earth Tiger Adventure, Rogue and Thunderbolt were hot on their heels.
The second leg was a mountain bike trail with multiple route options. It concluded at the boat ramp where teams did a paddle with some trekking sections in between.
Wild Earth showed off their mountain biking skills on the technical trails and came in first to the paddling transition area. However, then came Alpine Avengers’ time to shine, with their exceptional paddling abilities, they overtook the Tasmanians and arrive first at the finish.
Unprecedentedly hot weather and extreme heat warning declared across the whole of Victoria. made the already tough and technical course even harder. One team unfortunately was a DNF, and two unranked, with one participant taken to the nearest hospital with heat exhaustion.
The second day is a linear course, teams had 2 hour drive this morning and are now on the linear course which will take the Expedition course teams back to Falls Creek.
