At 9:00am (AEST) on Sunday 12 July over 450 competitors from across the country are set to race their own course at the exact same time, together, virtually at Race 2 of the Trail Running Series presented by MINI.

During these testing times and subsequent recent lockdown rules and border restrictions, there is one thing we’ve all found comfort in, providing strength and peace when we need it most… and that is RUNNING!

After the rainbow of camaraderie shone at virtual Race 1 back in June, word spread quickly that this race concept was not to be missed for Race 2. And what better time to stay motivated!

“Seeing the trail running community embrace and engage our virtual racing concept has been very inspiring and motivating,” said Race Director Sam Maffett.

“We can't wait to recreate the sense of unity and connection in sharing this unique experience with runners from all over Australia (and beyond!) again on Sunday!” added Maffett.

The virtual event format allows a far broader range of people to participate compared to when conducted as physical races.

Holly Bray of Victoria said of her virtual Race 1 experience; “This is the best virtual run I have done! All the others have lacked the social interaction and really fell flat; this is the closest to being at an actual event – thank you!”

Participants can choose to enter either 5km, 10km or 15km races over whatever course they have access to whilst actively respecting current social distancing and lockdown rules.

Simple technology will be used by competitors including Facebook Live, ZOOM, Strava and/or Race Map live tracking.

The virtual races are designed to give runners a date with friends when they need it most. Results will also be acknowledged online.

Entries for Sunday’s race are just $15 and include a range of give-a-ways from event sponsors. Entries close online half an hour prior to race start.

Traditionally, the annual Trail Running Series consists of five (physical!) events from 5km to 23km held in beautiful wilderness locations near Melbourne, attracting up to 1,500 keen trail runners at each event. Rapid Ascent plan to schedule two or three physical races to be held between October and January when the current situation has calmed down.

We would like to thank the Series’ new major sponsor MINI Countryman – a vehicle that is rugged, resilient and stylish - it definitely suits the mix of urban + adventure lifestyle we runners all pursue.
