News Release / 17.06.2009
in one of the UKs toughest races to raise money for the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) which supports serving soldiers, former soldiers and their families in times of need.Four officers from Glasgow will be joined by Andy Stockton, a former soldier who lost his arm whilst serving in Afghanistan to form ‘Team ABF’. They have spent all of their spare time over the past eight months preparing for the Three Peaks Yacht Race, both training and raising sponsorship and support, including a personal endorsement from Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE.
The Three Peaks Yacht Race starts on Sat 20 Jun 09 and will cover 389 miles of hugely demanding coastal sailing, 18 miles of cycling and 72 miles of running – with 14,000 feet of ascent to reach the highest points in Wales, England and Scotland.
32 teams will race under sail from Barmouth on the Welsh coast to Fort William in Scotland, via Caernarfon and Whitehaven; running to the summits of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis.
Competitors expect to complete the course in around 3-5 days depending upon the weather.
The ABF supports those with disabilities or mental illness, people experiencing homelessness or unemployment, and older people. It identifies and investigates eligible cases in ‘real need’, and provides them with financial support.
Entirely dependent on voluntary donations, the ABF must raise currently around £5.5M each year to continue its vital work with members of the Army Family.
Team ABF hopes to raise up to £15,000 for the ABF and are on target to reach their goal. They also hope to raise awareness of the vital work that the ABF does for the military community.
