Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race 2011
Interview with Bruce Duncan of adidas Terrex/Prunesco
Rob Howard / 16.02.2011
By the miracle of Skype I’ve just spoken with Bruce Duncan of the winning team at this year’s Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race. He was supping a well deserved hot chocolate in a coffee shop in the middle of Punta Arenas and as you might expect from a 3 times race winner was enjoying his rest and relaxation after a race which pushed the limits even for the world’s toughest race.“We finished yesterday at about 5pm and came straight back to town, he said. “It was a brilliant race but very tough and the weather was quite different to the past two years. For the first two days there was bright sunshine and we were not prepared for that! We are used to the cold here and had all the wrong clothes so we were much too hot
“The fine weather did give us the best views we’ve had from had from any race though and it was fantastic to see Torres del Paine in all its glory. That was one of the highlights of the race and the views on the first trek were amazing. The other was the second paddle, going down the fiord and past glaciers which fell directly into the sea beside us. At times we were bumping into icebergs.
“But then it got very, very wet, much more so than in the previous two years and the second trek was so slow. In the turba we were sinking to our knees and it was so much harder than any trek before … and that is saying something. The rivers were so high and cold, and difficult to get across and the distance on that second trek was unbelievable. I don’t think we were going to finish inside 10 days so the short cut was good.
“After the first paddle we never saw a team again until they caught us up at PC11 and they were in a very rough condition when they came in. Gear Junkies had taken some crazy risks to try and catch us, and they still didn’t. We raced really safely in the conditions as we know it can be dangerous out here.
