New Multi-Day Adventure Race Launched in Holland for 2022
Rob Howard / 31.03.2021
In March 2022, a new 55-hour adventure race will be organized in The Netherlands: Adventure Race Holland has arrived.
The Race Director is Arjen van der Berg, who has competed in about 70 adventure races, including most recently at Adventure Race Croatia and the Czech Adventure Race, racing with Team Dutch Energy in Balance.
The race offers a step up in distance for racers in the Dutch Adventure Race Series, which for the past few years has combined races in the country with a more professional approach. (The series is for pairs and has races from 8–24 hours.)
Van de Berg said, “This new race was set up to challenge the Dutch teams to push their boundaries and to allow foreign teams to cross the border into the Netherlands. With traditional Dutch components in the race, it will be a unique event in this little country.”
Taking place from March 9-13, the new race will offer a longer race early in the year in the European calendar, and a very different, Dutch, experience of racing, including several special challenges along the way. It will be very accessible from Scandinavia, the UK and Northern Europe.
The race will be organised like other expedition races in Europe, with teams of 4 racing over a 440km course for 3 days, with the course open for 55 hours. There will be a navigational/rogaine element to the race, with marked and laminated maps supplied, and the race moving team equipment between transitions.
Van de Berg continues, “It will be the first real multi-day XPD in Holland and for the first edition we will take 25 teams, 12 from Holland, 12 international and one wildcard.
“I'd like to give the many Dutch teams an opportunity to race for more than 1 night and to explore more, and I want to give the international teams the chance to prepare for other races in the summer and to see Holland. It is a long race, with 10 TA’s, and only one of those is used twice, but the teams will stay in the same race hotel before and after the race, and there will be a 2 hour bus ride to get to the start.
“The Netherlands is flat, and has very detailed maps, so it will be a very different experience for teams to race through traditional landscapes and small villages. We have many special MTB routes everywhere in Holland, and many rivers for paddling and SUP. The course will use a mix of these and the paddling will be in Canadian canoes with single bladed paddles.
It will visit several National Parks, 3 provinces and 8 nature reserves and the race will be based at the Brinkhotel Zuidlaren, which is located in the north-eastern part of The Netherlands in the middle of National Park 'the Drentsche Aa'.”
Entries open on April 22nd and the early bird entry fee is 1400 Euro.
