The ARWS Africa 2021 series starts this coming weekend when 38 teams and over 100 racers will take on the Expedition Africa 120km Bronkhorstspruit Adventure Race.
The race is for pairs and teams of 4, who will gather at the Deales Rock Holiday Resort to race in the Bronkies area. The race includes two cycle and two trekking stages, and one kayaking stage, and has a 24 hour time limit. Teams will set off from the race venue at 6am on Saturday after gathering for a welcoming ceremony and self-braai on Friday.
They will all carry SPOT GPS trackers, which you can follow on the Expedition Africa website, and will be tackling a course set by race planners Jolene and Thinus from Addicted2adventure.
The race is flying under the Expedition Africa banner and Heidi Muller said, “The ARWS Africa journey begins this weekend to establish the best Adventure Racing team in RSA for 2021, and this first 120km will help one team make it all the way to the 2022 World Champs in Paraguay.
“The winners will get a place in the final of the ARWS Africa Regional Series, which we plan to hold in Lesotho in November ... and the winners from there will win the World Champs place. Through the year we will hold 5 qualifying races in some of the most beautiful adventure destinations in RSA, which we hope will encourage teams to explore our wonderful country as much as possible.
“In these difficult times it’s a privilege to race and we want all the teams to enjoy every moment of the race this weekend.”
There is a strong entry, especially among the 4 person teams who are looking for the ARWS qualification points and places. Those with the strongest track records are Jabberwock, Songlines, Pinegold (with Donovan Sims and Hanno Smit), and Cyanosis Adventure Racing, who probably start as favourites.
